Description: Abstract Urban Expressionism is the title of my new photography/digital design series of original images based on the mutilated posters on New York’s billboards. I shot the original billboard photos between 1980 and 1981 throughout New York City. The billboards testify to the confusion and constant change which permeate life in the city.
With patches of old posters showing through the tears in the more recent ones, these billboards are time capsules, like miniature archaeological sites whose distinct layers preserve the chronology of past events and styles, and make it possible to compare them with the present. To further accentuate the concept of change over time, I have layered multiple billboard images and then digitally peeled away the surface image to reveal elements of the image below. These abstract collages of old and new imagery achieve their ragged beauty through a combination of chance and deliberate design.
